Likely causes

Sources do not establish a single root cause; diagnosis is needed. Owner-reported fixes are listed below.

Fix, in plain English

No single fix is established by these reports. A Service 4WD message can point to the power transfer unit (PTU): NHTSA recall 26V290000 (FCA 40D) covers certain 2019-2023 Jeep Cherokee vehicles because the PTU may fail, with dealers updating drivetrain control module, PTU and electronic park brake software and replacing the PTU as necessary, free of charge (final remedy still pending as of the June 25, 2026 interim letters). Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, then have the 4WD system diagnosed. Coverage depends on your VIN: NHTSA owner complaints filed in October 2026 report that some 2021 Cherokees with a single-speed PTU were told they are not included.

DIY difficulty: Pro

Diagnosis needs a scan tool; repair or replacement needs a lift, transmission jack and the manufacturer's fluid fill/relearn procedure. (Our assessment.)
