Fix, in plain English

Most common owner-reported solution on CarComplaints.com: replace the PTU. NHTSA recall 26V290000 (FCA 40D, filed July 2026) covers certain 2019-2023 Jeep Cherokee vehicles because the power transfer unit (PTU) may fail, which can cause a loss of drive power or a vehicle rollaway. Dealers will update the drivetrain control module, PTU and electronic park brake software and replace the PTU as necessary, free of charge; interim owner letters were mailed June 25, 2026, and further letters will follow when the final remedy is available. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or call FCA at 1-800-853-1403 before paying for a PTU out of pocket. Coverage depends on your VIN: NHTSA owner complaints filed in October 2026 report that some 2021 Cherokees with a single-speed PTU were told they are not included.

DIY difficulty: Pro

Diagnosis needs a scan tool; repair or replacement needs a lift, transmission jack and the manufacturer's fluid fill/relearn procedure. (Our assessment.)

Cost
