What the estimate covers

Labor to replace the power transfer unit (PTU, the front-mounted gearbox that sends power to the rear driveshaft on many AWD/4WD crossovers) with a new or remanufactured unit. Replacement units often come pre-filled with fluid. The unit, seals, fluid top-off, skid plate removal where fitted, and any related driveshaft or axle work are extra; engine and drivetrain layout (for example 4-cylinder vs V6) changes access a lot. Several models had recalls or warranty extensions for PTU failures (for example Jeep Cherokee): check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and ask a dealer about extended coverage before paying.

Labor hours used: 2–5 h, our own editorial estimate (not taken from a licensed labor guide).
